Director Dr. Amir Szold

Main description
Laparoscopic and thorascopic surgery is a relatively new field in general surgery, which has evolved during the past decade. This approach enables surgery of the abdomen and chest without the need for large incisions in the body wall. Instead, the surgeon makes several very small incisions through which a miniature video camera and instruments are inserted. The surgical procedures are performed while the operating team is monitoring the movements on a large video screen. Today, removal of the gall bladder and appendix using this approach are standard procedures. More advanced procedures are being performed in specialized centers such as ours. These include operations for diaphragmatic hernias, removal of diverticular and repair of strictures of the esophagus, gastric bypass surgery for morbid obesity, partial gastrectomy, repair of ulcer perforations, splenectomy for various hematological disorders, pancreatic surgery, small bowel resection, colectomy for diverticular disease, inflammatory bowel disease, benign tumors, lysis of intraabdominal adhesions, and various diagnostic procedures. Our team was the first in Israel to implement kidney removal laparoscopically for transplantation in living related donors. Chest procedures include operations for excessive hand sweating (sympatectomy) and lung biopsies, etc. Following endoscopic surgery procedures, patients recover quickly, with the vast majority being discharged within 48 hours. The service is now the largest advanced endoscopic surgery referral center in Israel.

The unit is also the first in Israel to be certified eligible for training surgical fellows in laparoscopic surgery.
