Main description Surgery B resulted from the merger of two surgical departments (Surgery B and Surgery C) several years ago and now comprises 88 hospital beds. The department was the first in Israel to implement the principle of sub-specialization in general surgery and led the way to the development of specialty units in this country. The department was also the first in Israel to establish a surgical intensive care unit. Dr. Oded Szold, a leading specialist in surgical intensive care, heads the unit’s designated team of physicians, nurses and paramedical personnel.
Approximately 5000 patients are admitted to the department per annum, 40% on an emergency basis and 60% electively. Most are referrals from other medical centers and physicians throughout Israel. More than 3000 operations are performed annually, more than 70% of which are considered major procedures usually for complex oncological surgery.
The department has seven units of sub-specialization: Trauma (with 12 designated beds), Coloproctology, Advanced Endoscopic Surgery, Regional Oncological surgery, Transplantation, Liver Surgery, and the Surgical Intensive Care Unit. It also has a Bariatric Surgery Service (gastric bypass surgery for morbid obesity). In addition to routine elective and emergency surgery and the fields of sub-specialization covered by the units, the department has gained vast experience in oncological surgery and serves as a national referral center for complex cancer procedures. More than 250 pancreas operations have been performed over the past five years for pancreatic cancer, in addition to 150 operations for rare tumors of retroperitoneal sarcoma during the same period. The department also performs other relatively rare surgical procedures in endocrine surgery (more than 100 adrenalectomies over the past five years).
The department is affiliated to the Sackler Faculty of Medicine of the University of Tel Aviv. All department physicians are involved in academia and the instruction of medical students, medical residents and training specialists in various fields of general surgery. Five of the senior staff are Professors of Surgery. The department also conducts extensive clinical research in general surgery and basic research in subjects such as oncology, angiogenesis, emergency medicine, inflammatory diseases of the intestines, and other topics. Senior staff members collaborate in clinical and research programs with Harvard Medical School, MD Anderson Medical Center, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and several other well known trauma centers.
