Main description
The Department of General Surgery A of the Tel Aviv Medical Center teats a variety of patients requiring surgical care, patients suffering from diseases of the digestive system and specializes in surgical oncology, diseases of the esophagus and stomach, gall bladder, pancreas and the large and small intestines. Breast surgeries are performed by our affiliate, the Center for Breast Health. The doctors of the department perform cutting-edge oncological surgery such as: excision of the sentinel lymph node, irrigation of the abdominal cavity with chemotherapeutic agents, radio-isotopic guided surgery, surgery of the esophagus and adjacent cavities of the thorax and abdomen, endoscopic surgeries and more.

The guiding principle of the department is the development of a personal relationship between the patient, the family, and the department staff. With our open door policy, patients that have either been hospitalized in the department or operated on are entitled to medical consultation at all times, both within the department and in the outpatient clinic.

The medical staff of the department provides consultation for all departments of the hospital, works in cooperation and takes part in joint patient-care discussions during staff meetings with the Gastroenterology Unit, Oncology Unit, Radiology and the General Surgery Unit.

The department actively participates in clinical research with the Weitzman Institute, the University of Tel Aviv, and overseas research institutes such as the National Cancer Institute of Washington, D.C. Among the topics of research are: up-to-date treatment of pancreatitis and peritonitis, photodynamic therapy, new modalities for treating colon cancer and immunotrophy.

The department provides medical service to patients admitted on an emergency basis via the Emergency Room, outpatient clinics and from other medical centers.

The department houses 36 beds including 6 for intensive care. There are 11 medical specialists in the departments. The nursing staff is comprised of a head nurse, assistant head nurses, orientation nurse, registered nurses and others.
