Main description
The Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care of the Tel Aviv Medical Center comprises the followings: the General Intensive Care Unit, the General Operating Room Area, the Ambulatory Operating Room, the Pre-operative Admission and Post-Anesthesia Care Unit, the Obstetric and Gynecological Anesthesia Unit, Pain Clinic and Acute Pain Service. The Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care includes some 50 physicians specialists in Cardiothoracic, neurosurgical and pediatric anesthesia, intensive care and emergency care.

The General Intensive Care Unit, under the direction of Dr. Patrick Sorkin, treats a variety of patients in critical conditions who require artificial respiration, invasive monitoring and advanced treatment for acute and chronic liver and renal failure.

The General Operating-Room Area, under the direction of Dr. Daniel Ogorek, performs all types of complex and advanced surgery within its 22 independent surgery suites.

The Ambulatory Operating-Room Area, under the direction of Dr. Ron Flaishon, provides surgical services to patients on an ambulatory basis, where the required length of hospitalization is from one to three days.

The Pre-operative Admission and Post-Anesthesia Care Unit, under the direction of Dr. Avi Weinbroum, prepares patients to surgery and provides close observation and short- as well as medium-term follow-up after surgery, or until the patients are transportable back to an in-house hospitalization ward/unit.

The Obstetric and Gynecological Anesthesia Unit, under the direction of Dr. Michael Lottan, runs two general gynecological and obstetric operating rooms, independent from ambulatory surgical suites and provides pain control for the parturient (87% epidurally).

The Pain Clinic, the first of its kind established in Israel, under the direction of Prof. David Niv, treats patients who suffer from various chronic pain syndromes, either by medications, advanced invasive techniques and by alternative means.

The Acute Pain Service, under the direction of Dr. Nissim Marouani, provides a 24-h pain control service to all surgical, medical or oncological patients, children included.

The department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care runs a Research Laboratory that investigates acute ischemia and reperfusion conditions and remedy to such conditions as well as new techniques aiming at better controlling postoperative pain.
