Overview
The Urology Department of the Tel Aviv Medical Center provides general urology services as detailed in the text below. The department treats both residents of Tel Aviv and residents from the greater, outlying areas that are referred due to the excellence in care that has been developed within the department. In addition to an in-house hospitalization unit, the department provides outpatient services that include outpatient clinics for prostate cancer, cancer of the urinary bladder and urinary system, cancer of the kidneys and testes, kidney stones and endo-urology, and sexual dysfunction.
The department provides a wide variety of fine, invasive and diagnostic ambulatory procedures including cystoscopy for treating the bladder, advanced imaging techniques such as trans-rectal ultrasound for diagnosing prostate problems, ultrasound with the Doppler effect for diagnosing vascular problems of the reproductive system and causal factors of sexual dysfunction, urodynamic equipment for clarification of problems with bladder dysfunction and others.
The department performs a wide variety of urologic operations: prostate surgery for cancerous diseases of the prostate, bladder, kidneys and testes, including laparoscopy; surgery for sexual dysfunction, infertility, kidney stones, and incontinence. Likewise, the pediatric urology unit performs unique urologic operations to correct various congenital defects.
Since 1988, an advanced technique for treating prostate cancer has been applied utilizing radioactive, iodine isotopic implants in the prostate. To date, there have been over 350 patients in Israel who have been treated with this technique that allows for minimal detriment to the quality of life of the patients. According to research findings, this approach has received widespread favor internationally and its reputation is excellent.
The department conducts a wide variety of academic research and is a leader in a number of clinical studies in such subjects as benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH,) cancers of the prostate and urinary bladder, and sexual dysfunction. Additionally, the department conducts basic research in cooperation with the Weitzman Institute, the Hebrew University, and the University of Tel Aviv.
The Urology Department has a total of 28 beds for adults and a varying number of beds in the Pediatric Urology Unit at the Dana Children's Hospital of the Tel Aviv Medical Center. Most of the physicians are recognized as senior academic clinicians and excellent senior lecturers. Currently, three physicians from various subspecialties have been sent overseas for continuing education.
